Musician Wyclef Jean has been using the internet to boost charity fundraising for a non-profit organisation.

Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund is raising money to assist those affected by the seven-magnitude tremor that struck the Caribbean country on Tuesday (January 12th).

The pop star arrived in Haiti on Wednesday and has been using social networking site Twitter to improve charity fundraisings for the relief fund, encouraging his followers to donate $5 (£3) via text message.

His efforts have so far raised some $400,000 for people living in his native country, the Los Angeles Times reported yesterday.

A statement from the singer on the Yele website called for the US military to support Haiti as it recovers from the quake.

'I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse. We must act now,' he said.

It is not yet known how many people lost their lives during the quake, but the Guardian estimates that some three million people have been affected by it.
