Sony uses online gaming to bolster Haiti not-for-profit fundraising03/02/10 Written by Matthew Carter. Video game developers have been using new technologies to improve not-for-profit fundraising for the victims of the Haiti earthquake, it has been revealed. Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) reports it has raised $25,000 (£15,600) for the American Red Cross through the sale of in-game items, which online gamers purchased in order to support the campaign. Each of the relief items bought by gamers playing Everquest, Everquest II and Free Realms secured a $10 donation to the charity by Sony. SOE president John Smedley commented that the charity fundraising initiative reached the sum of $25,000 in just three days. 'It's all because of the generosity of our players,' Mr Smedley said. 'They really stepped up for a good cause and we're proud to lend support to the estimated three million Haitians affected by the recent earthquakes,' he added. The company recently raised $26,900 for Child's Play, a non-profit organisation that provides video games and other toys to children in 70 hospitals across the world. It also generated $10,000 for Habitat for Humanity through another charity fundraising drive that saw players of Star Wars Galaxies destroy in-game buildings and structures.
