Social networking sites provide support for major DEC appeal07/10/09 Written by Mathew Carter A major appeal has been launched online and on television to increase fundraising for those affected by the earthquake and typhoons that have wreaked havoc in Asia and the Pacific in the past week. The Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) has announced the appeal and is encouraging people to provide funding for the people who have been hit by the two disasters. The organisation is using social networking technology to reach as many people as possible in a short space of time, having set up a Twitter page and Facebook page to increase awareness of the disasters. DEC chief executive Brendan Gormley said: 'The nature of these disasters vividly recalls the horrors of 2004 Tsunami. Millions have seen the world they know ripped apart around them.' Last week, a major earthquake hit Indonesia, near the Sumatran city of Padang, with a tsunami also being created by the tremor. Meanwhile, Vietnam and the Philippines have been struck by some of the worst typhoons in recent memory, causing massive flooding across the countries. This news item is © CTT Copyright
