Social network charity fundraising initiative gives $70,000 boost to US cancer organisations26/10/09 Written by Isabel Griffith. An online charity fundraising initiative has raised $70,000 (£43,000) for cancer organisations in the US. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that a record number of status updates on social networking websites Twitter and Facebook that used the phrase '#BeatCancer' provided funds for four non-profit organisations. Some 209,771 users posted the phrase, a new world record, and sponsors eBay, Miller and Genesis Today donated cash to the charities for each. 'The economy is terrible, there's not that much money around to share, but there are all these opportunities as long as you are authentic and you have a message that you believe in and you are passionate about,' said Meaghan Edelstein, founder of Spirit Jump, one of the charities set to benefit from the fundraising drive. Celebrities such as Perez Hilton and Kim Kardashian were also involved in the #BeatCancer charity fundraising initiative. The newspaper also reports that YouTube viewers donated enough money to UN World Food Program for World Food Day on October 16th to provide school lunches for 140,000 children in the developing world. YouTube receives around one billion hits every day, it was reported recently. This news item is © CTT Copyright
