Social media networks 'bring people closer to charities'

12/0509

Social networking websites such as Twitter and Facebook can help to 'bring people closer to charities' and possibly boost fundraising, according to a leading expert.

Australian movie star Hugh Jackman recently launched a campaign on Twitter where he called for requests from fellow users to which charity he should donate $100,000 (£67,147,726).

This is part of a growing movement of charities and individuals using social media as part of their campaigning and fundraising for good causes.

Charity website JustGiving recently launched a special application on Facebook, which was downloaded by almost 300,000 people last month, reports Times Online.

Jonathan Waddington, a charity champion for the website, told the newspaper: 'Social media sites can bring people closer to charities.

'For example, by creating videos about their work on YouTube or putting photos on Flickr charities are reaching out to people in their own space.'

In related news, the Toronto People with Aids Foundation recently launched an innovative social networking campaign in Canada to boost fundraising for the cause.
