Robbie Williams can't play for fundraiser

21/07/08

Former Take That star, Robbie Williams, has announced that he will be unable to attend a charity football game because he is suffering from a knee injury, NME reported.

Williams set up Soccer Aid in a bid to raise money for Unicef. The fundraising event, which sees all-star celebrity teams battle it out on the pitch, will no longer be captained by Williams.

The singer explained his disappointment at missing out to ITN. He said: 'Being able to help so many people through Soccer Aid was one of the true highlights of my life. I'm gutted that this time round my knee isn't up to it so unfortunately I'm out of the game.'

He added: 'But I hope that everyone involved has the time of their life like I did, and raises loads of money for Unicef and the best side wins.'

This year's fundraiser will take place on September 7th at Wembley Stadium. Stars taking to the pitch include pop-idol runner-up Gareth Gates and Westlife star Nicky Byrne.

They will be joined by football heroes Jamie Redknapp and Alan Shearer.
