Professor harnesses social media for new clean water fundraising initiative08/10/09 Written by Isabel Griffith. A professor at Seattle University has called on his students to harness the power of social media tools to help develop a new fundraising effort. Peter Blomquist, an adjunct professor of public affairs and non-profit leadership, has challenged some of his students to inspire and educate at least 1,000 people about a charitable cause by using social networking, the Seattle University Spectator reports. Eight students at the university have taken up the initiative and have been running Support Water, a project at the university that is aiming to boost awareness of the issue of clean water around the world and boost fundraising for new water sources. Although it began as a ten-week summer project to simply educate and inform people about the issue of clean water, the scheme has now developed into a fully-fledged fundraising effort to raise $5,000 through social media. Social networking site Twitter has recently added a large number of social entrepreneurs and top figures in the charity world to its 'suggested users' list, CNet.com has reported.
