Givabit charity iPhone application 'could have a huge impact'

16/06/09

A new application for Apple's iPhone could open up new possibilities for charity communications and fundraising.

The premise of Givabit is to send a short daily description of a selected charity to users of the application, giving them a chance to donate funds.

Developers are calling for public donations of at least $3,100 (£1,890) by July 1st to get the project underway, after which the software itself will be freely downloadable.

Laurel Angelica of charity technology website TakePart commented that the program could herald a new dawn for charity fundraising.

'With millions of people using the iPhone, if you get enough people on the Givabit bandwagon, all of the sudden, small dollars have a huge impact,' she said.

Donors who support the development of Givabit will have a say on which voluntary organisations it features, its website states.

In other charity communications news, an IT charity is using the internet to create solutions to fundraising problems.

Computer Aid International is running a fundraising Twitterthon today (June 15th), which aims to encourage internet users to donate 1,000 PCs to good causes via social networking website Twitter.
