Voting has begun on a new award aiming to showcase some of the most innovative online charity communications, access and fundraising ideas.

Telecoms operator TalkTalk has announced the shortlist for its Digital Heroes competition and judging is now open to the public.

The firm's website has details of the 36 contenders, three each from 12 regions around the UK. Voters can select one favourite from every area before the competition closes on October 25th.

One voluntary sector worker up for the award is Joe Cash, of the Cedar Foundation, a charity delivering services to disabled people in Northern Ireland.

Mr Cash has designed a new computer interface that can be used by severely disabled people to use the internet, write emails and send text messages.

Nick Johnson, meanwhile, is the man behind Pelican Books - a website that allows users to send books directly to schools in Africa.
