£180k raised through Twestival charity fundraising initiative26/03/10 Written by Sally O'Connell. A charity fundraising initiative has raised some $280,000 (£188,000) for poverty organisation Concern Worldwide through the use of technology. While attendees of events all over the world were encouraged to leave their laptops behind, organisers used social networking website Twitter to recruit individuals in 200 cities to the second global Twestival. The project saw thousands of Twitter users meet up in the flesh to generate funds for the charity that will be injected into its education programmes in the developing world. Adrian Mahon, organiser of the Dublin Twestival event, told the Irish Times:'People get to meet people they have befriended on Twitter over the year and have a good time. It's about using social media for social good.' Concern Worldwide chief executive Tom Arnold praised the charity fundraising effort, citing it as a good example of how technology can be used to organise vital action. The charity operates its own Twitter page with 3,200 followers. This news item is © CTT Copyright
