Youth volunteers targeted for international projects

16/09/08

Youth volunteering is being promoted by teams visiting schools as a new agreement has been signed between charities V and Worldwide Volunteering.

The idea is to bring together UK and international projects and the director of Worldwide Volunteering has described the move as a 'genetleman's agreement' that they hope will make better use of resources.

People between 16 and 25 will be encouraged to volunteer in their communities in V's vinvolved scheme.

Vinvolve teams will then direct those who have expressed an interest in working abroad to Worldwide Volunteering.

Peter Sharp, director of Worldwide Volunteering has said that other volunteering charities should not be concerned about being excluded.

He said: 'We will tell people about any volunteering opportunities we know about, whether they come from our database or from local knowledge'.

V's vinvolved programme began in April and sends local teams into schools, local authorities and youth clubs to spread the volunteering message.
