Parents warned of internet bullying

21/11/08

An Irish charity is encouraging parents to learn about the internet and the ways that their children use it.

Derry group EverybodyOnline hopes that parents will be able to help fight cyber bullying by getting to understand the online technology.

The local internet project has teamed up with the Western Education & Library Board to promote their initiative throughout anti-bullying week.

Karen Wilson, EverybodyOnline project officer for the north-west, said that digital technology is becoming an 'essential part' of everyday life for today's youth.

'Children use mobile phones, computers and the internet on a daily basis to learn, communicate and socialise with friends and family,' she added.

But with the older generation being left behind, Ms Wilson warned that they will find it difficult to ensure that their children are not being exposed to abuse such as nasty text messages or hurtful emails.

Recently, Coutts issued a report highlighting the largest beneficiaries of charitable donations, revealing that higher education institutions received over £300 million last year.
