Crimestoppers' text initiative

14/10/08

A new initiative has been launched by a crime-fighting charity to encourage young people to provide information about those carrying knives via text message.

The service set up by Crimestoppers will allow people to send information via text to an anonymous hotline. The charity is planning to promote the service throughout London schools.

Michael Laurie CBE, Crimestoppers' chief executive, called on communities to get involved and 'do their bit' to help stop knife crime.

Commenting on the adoption of the technology, Lord Ashcroft, KCMG, founder and Chairman of Crimestoppers, said: 'The huge popularity of texting, especially amongst young people, has given us a valuable opportunity to engage with school students to encourage them to pass on information about knife crime in a quick and easy way whilst maintaining their anonymity.'

Lord Ashcroft explained that the charity had come on a long way since its inception 20 years and that technology had moved along with it.

Crimestoppers recently launched a service that allows Scottish prisoners to call the charity about crime in complete anonymity.
