ChildLine get support from BT Yahoo

05/09/08

ChildLine has expanded its night telephone service after a campaign by BT Yahoo promises to give the charity financial backing, charity website Third Sector reports.

The support service, which is run by the NSPCC, aims to use the funds generated from BT Yahoo's support to recruit more counsellors in Birmingham and Glasgow.

Staff will help to man the charity's telephone helplines and ChildLine are hoping to be able to answer over 1,000 calls a night from children in need of support.

BT Yahoo has pledged to give five per cent of the money it generates from advertisers who have sponsored links on the web page it has dedicated to ChildLine.

New research from the charity has revealed that it is struggling as it does not have enough volunteers.

This shortage means that a third of calls received by ChildLine go unanswered. BT Yahoo made the pledge after hearing about the shortfall.

Commenting in an interview with the Daily Mail, Esther Rantzen, founder of ChildLine, said: 'We receive some of our most serious calls at night from children running away from violence or abuse, or from children who feel they simply cannot cope with their own despair.'
