Social networking sites could be useful fundraising tools for charities

09/07/08

Charities need to harness the power of social media sites, according to an industry insider.

Unofficial advocates are launching appeals on sites such as Facebook and this is causing problems as charities are unaware of the campaigns, the Guardian reported.

Tom Mansel-Pleydel, head of client services at JustGiving, said: 'It used to be a charity's relationship with people started when they became donors but now it can start before they even know about it.'

Mr Mansel-Pleydel gave the example of a boy who has posted a video on YouTube supporting the BBC's Children in Need. The page generated 160,000 views and therefore a lot of publicity.
