Slumdog Millionaire team donate money to Indian campaigning charity20/04/09
Plan India is set to receive the cash to help its work aiding children in the slums of Mumbai, which was the location for the hit film. It is intended that the funds will go towards benefitting 2,000 families and around 5,000 children with improved health provisions, childcare, water, sanitation, protection and education. Danny Boyle, the film's director, said: 'Slumdog Millionaire's success is to support the underprivileged children of Mumbai. 'Having benefited so much from the hospitality of the people of Mumbai it is only right that some of the success of the movie be put back into the city in areas where it is needed most and where it can make a real difference.' Cast member Anil Kapoor recently give his fee for appearing in the film to the charity and is now one of its patrons and goodwill ambassadors. In related news, charity group Action Aid recently praised what it has termed the 'Slumdog effect', which has led to a spurt of interest in donating to charities working in India.
