Rise of personal technology 'has bolstered third sector campaigning'04/02/10 Written by Isabel Griffith. New technologies can provide a massive boost for charity campaigning operations on an international scale, it has been claimed. According to David Bois of Tonic.com, there are a number of recent examples that prove how effective the internet and new technological equipment can be in raising funds and awareness of vital causes. The amount raised for Haiti earthquake victims through handheld technologies such as iPhones stood at $35 million (£22 million) on Monday (February 1st), $24 million of which was given to the American Red Cross, the Miami Herald notes. According to the organisation, it attracted donations totalling $5 million within two days, a fact that proves the effectiveness of the internet and mobile technology in charity campaigning. Mr Bois commented: 'Our increased reliance on personal technology has radically transformed our ability to stay informed and connected, and just as quickly, as the situation merits, we can respond.' He added that the 'immediacy and broad availability' of technology has made it easier than ever for supporters to donate to their favourite cause when on the move. In related news, video game developer Sony Online Entertainment recently raised $25,000 for the America Red Cross by encouraging gamers to pledge funds. This news item is © CTT Copyright
