Keys' plea attracts 100,000 charity text donations

29/05/09

More than 100,000 people in the US have donated to a charity via text message, it has been confirmed.

Earlier this month, pop star Alicia Keys called for all fans of American Idol to use text messaging to support Keep a Child Alive, a charity aimed at protecting children and their families from HIV and AIDS that she helped establish.

The award-winning singer encouraged viewers to send the word 'alive' to 90999 in order to donate $5 (£) to the good cause.

Speaking on the show, Ms Keys said: 'No matter how much or how little we each have, when we pull together we have the power to change the world.'

The news emphasises the need for organisations to use new technological developments to boost charity fundraising and communications.

In related news, a children's charity will produce a video designed to encourage safe internet use among children, it has been reported.

Wise Kids will collaborate with the Urdd Digital Club and BT Wales to produce an informative short which will be used for training sessions with adults and children in Wales.
