Domestic abuse charity runs hard-hitting campaign

05/08/08

A charity that aims to help the victims of domestic violence has launched a hard-hitting campaign aimed at raising awareness of the early warning signs of abuse, thirdsector.co.uk reported.

Refuge yesterday (August 4th) announced that it would be running the print adverts this summer and explained that its marketing would extend to coverage on TV and radio.

The charity has suggested that rather than being a fundraising opportunity, it is a communications campaign.

Lisa King, director of communications and fundraising at Refuge, explained: 'The campaign centres around the early warning signs of domestic violence.'

She continued: 'So rather than let women know about our services once they have been victims, we want to forewarn them about the issue.'

According to the charity, which is the UK's largest single provider of support and shelter for female victims of domestic violence, some more subtle forms of control such as telling a woman what she can wear are often not recognised as 'abusive' behaviour.

Ms King warned, however, that it could escalate to violence. The charity has also asked for the government's support to help target school children.
