Charities given advice on how to get celebrity endorsement

10/07/08

Charities wanting to get the backing of a celebrity have been told to go through an intermediary who knows the famous person.

Martin Shaw, a consultant at Midas Fundraising Associates, told delegates at the Institute of Fundraising National Convention: 'My view is that we're fundraisers - if we don't ask, we don't get, so for heaven's sake, ask! Pick up the phone!'

The organisation advised charities to approach celebrities that are known for their work with not-for-profit organisations but who are not overexposed.

They also suggested avoiding agents, unless the charity knew them.  According to Mr Shaw, celebrities also appreciate being kept up to date on what is happening with the campaign they are supporting.
