Charities could be exempted from fee for playing copyrighted music02/07/08 The Intellectual Property Office is consulting over whether charities should be made exempt from paying performance rights licences, Third Sector reported. Under current legislation any business that plays music which can be heard by staff or members of the public must pay the Performing Rights Society (PRS) a fee for the privilege. If agreed, non-profit bodies with incomes of less than £20,000 could be exempted or royalties for music played may be charged at an "equitable" rate. According to the NME, over half a million businesses in the UK are playing music illegally.
