Celebrities asked to donate handbags online for cancer research

24/06/08

Some charities are finding ever-more inventive ways of harnessing technology to boost fundraising efforts, and often combine online and traditional marketing methods to boost results.

One such campaign is Cancer Research UK's latest fundraising campaign that aims to get celebrities to auction their designer handbags to raise money for the charity.

The charity will be working in partnership with handbag.com, an online lifestyle magazine.  Stars will be asked to offer their handbags for auction through a dedicated eBay page.

In addition, the charity will be canvassing members of the public and trying to encourage them to donate their unwanted handbags to Cancer Research UK shops.

Individuals will then be encouraged to buy another bag when they pop in to their local charity shop.

Celebrity endorsement is a popular tactic that charities employ to try and boost the effectiveness of their campaigns.

Leona Lewis, Razorlight and Dame Shirley Bassey are just some of the celebrities who will be playing to a crowd of 46,664 people in Hyde Park on Friday (June 27th) to mark Nelson Mandela's birthday and raise money for his AIDS charity.
