Campaigning website boosts goods donations to UK charities16/02/10 Written by Matthew Carter. A charity campaigning website has diverted £500,000 worth of goods from landfill sites to third sector organisations in the last year. Since it launched in December 2008, Giving World Online has encouraged businesses and retailers to give a total of 66 tonnes of clothes, educational materials, furniture and toys to 450 charities, UK Fundraising reports. The site gives firms a platform on which to advertise surplus stock or miscellaneous items to the third sector, while charities can file requests for specific items. Rama Bhalla, founder and director of the website, commented: 'The current overall average of free goods received is already £1,225 per charity.' The charity campaigning service is free to both companies and charities and was shortlisted for the Guardian Charity Awards 2009. Organisations involved in the scheme include the Fire Fighters Charity and the Hollybank Trust. Some £1.37 billion worth of goods are wasted by businesses in the UK every year, according to the website. This news item is © CTT Copyright
